The PoreMaster mercury intrusion porosimeter

PoreMaster Series: Pore size distributions by Mercury Intrusion

The PoreMaster range are fully automated, rapid and secure instruments for the measurement of pore sizes in the range 0.0036 micron to over 950 micron diameter. The technique of mercury porosimetry is applied. Mercury is a non-wetting, non-reactive liquid which requires a pressure to be applied to force the mercury into the pores. The Washburn equation ( D = -4 γ cos(θ)/P ) allows the pore size to be calculated from the applied pressure required to fill pores.

The amount of mercury intruded as a function of applied pressure allows both the pore volume and pore size distribution to be determined. Bulk and apparent density plus particle size can also be measured.

This type of equipment is used to characterize pores in materials used in a wide variety of industries: ceramics, catalysts, electrodes, building materials, medical devices, pharmaceutical, specialist polymers.

Poremaster instruments are available with:

  • Multiple characterisation models available in the software.

  • Up to 2 low pressure and 2 high pressure stations.

  • Enhanced safety features including mercury vapour trap and safe extraction options

  • Automated mercury transfer to avoid user contact.

  • Simultaneous use of both high and low pressure stations.

  • Dual safety interlocks to avoid risk of contamination of the environment

  • Wide range of cell/penetrometers available to accommodate the wide majority of samples.

  • Easy access to facilitate routine service procedures
