For powders and granular materials, the volume occupied by a given weight of product depends strongly on the degree of compaction - this bulk density is generally highly variable and depends on the history and storage conditions of the material. Tapped Density measurements remove this variability, by obtaining a known, reproducible degree of compaction.
The AutoTap instrument subjects a sample in a graduated cylinder to a number of mechanical disturbances, by tapping with a controlled force, which is determined by a drop of known height. This gives a highly reproducible degree of compaction. Simultaneous rotation of the cylinder gives a horizontal surface which allows the user to simply read the volume from the marked scale.
